Shared Decision Making Structure:

Nursing Councils

Shared decision making is a unique partnership between leadership and bedside nursing staff. A shared decision making model provides a structure through which nurses can manage their practice with a higher level of professional autonomy with the support of nursing leadership.

At Suburban Hospital, there are four Shared Decision Making Councils designed to advance nursing practice and improve patient outcomes:

Professional Practice Council

The Professional Practice Council is established to guide the continuing development of nursing practice. Members of this council are involved in decision making regarding:                                 

  • Standards, policies, or procedures that relate to nursing practice               

  • Product review or technology selections that impact nursing practice               

  • Peer review                               

  • Concerns or issues regarding nursing practice                                         

  • Changes in nursing documentation

Professional Development Council

Professional Development Council

The Professional Development Council is established to support nurses’ professional growth and development. Members in activities

involving:                          

  • Nurse recruitment & retention strategies                 

  • Continuing education activities                                

  • Nurses’ Week planning                                            

  • Certification, education and membership in professional organizations                                      

  • Education & competency needs                                                                                      

Quality, Safety and Service Council

The Quality, Safety and Service Council is established to actively involve nurses in initiatives that will improve quality, safety, and service to our patients. Council members will be involved in data collection, analysis and improvement efforts related to patient care such as:    

  • Patient Safety                                                     

  • Medication Safety                                              

  • Infection Control                                              

  • Falls                                                                           

  • Pressure Ulcers                                                 

  • Patient Family Centered Care                              

  • Patient Satisfaction

Evidence Based Practice and Research Council

The Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and Research Council is established to meet our nursing mission of patient care by implementing nursing research and applying evidence based practices.  On this council, nurses learn more about EBP and participate in:                               

  • EBP projects                                                                      

  • Nursing research                                                       

  • Nursing publications                                                

  • Nursing journal clubs                                                

  • Nursing grand rounds
