Bethesda, Md., (June 26, 2012) – Cecil Calliste of Silver Spring, lead anesthesia technician at Suburban Hospital, recently received the 2012 Humanitarian Award from the Suburban Hospital Medical Staff for his volunteer service in the community.

“It is an honor to receive this award from my peers at Suburban,” said Calliste, “The Lord has been very good to me so I always try to give back whenever possible. As long as I am living, I will keep helping people any way I can.”

A native of Trinidad, Calliste has worked at Suburban Hospital since 1975 and has been serving the homeless in Montgomery County and Washington, D.C. for more than 30 years. As a volunteer at the Adventist Community Services Center in Silver Spring, he is the founding member of the Lord’s Lunch food program in Washington, D.C, which distributes food to local organizations, including Casa de Corazon Maryland, the Long Branch Senior Center and The Shepherd’s Table .

Along with fellow volunteers, Calliste produces and distributes roughly 1000 boxed lunches per week to homeless people in shelters and parks around the Washington, D.C. metro area. The Lord’s Lunch partners with Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hyattsville, Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church and The Takoma Park Church in Takoma Park, MD to assist with distribution.

After successfully battling lymphatic cancer in 1998, Calliste refocused his efforts on serving the community and has won several commendations for volunteer service including the Adventist Community Services Award, the Maryland JC Penny Golden Rule Award and the Marriott Spirit to Serve Award.
