Bethesda, Maryland -- November 30, 2011 --- Pamela Wright, M.D., has been named medical director of the Suburban Hospital Breast Center.  Katherine Alley, M.D., who has cared for thousands of area women with breast cancer and was the center’s director for 15 years, has announced her retirement from active practice.  She will assume the title of medical director emeritus.

Under Dr. Alley’s leadership, the Suburban Hospital Breast Center became one of the area’s premier breast programs. She was one of the first surgeons dedicated to breast care in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

“Katherine Alley definitely knocked down barriers in the medical community and has been a committed advocate for women with breast cancer,” said Michael Zenilman, M.D., vice chairman and regional director of surgery for Johns Hopkins Medicine. “She became a surgeon at a time when there were few female surgeons; then she made the decision to limit her practice to breast care.  Dr. Alley has wholeheartedly embraced clinical research outcomes and carefully educates her patients about the results and their options for care.”  She has been voted “Top Doctor” in Washingtonian magazine numerous times.  Prior to joining Suburban Hospital in 1997, Dr. Alley was the director of the Breast Center at the Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Wright joined the Suburban Hospital medical staff in 2003 and was named the associate medical director of the Breast Center in 2006.  She also currently serves as the cancer liaison physician to the American College of Surgeons and was honored with the Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award for her work with the Commission on Cancer.  She received the Healthcare Hero Award from the American Cancer Society and has also been named a "Top Doctor" by her peers in the Washingtonian magazine multiple times.  She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  She is one of only a small number of surgeons in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area certified in breast ultrasound by the American society of Breast Surgeons.

“We are fortunate that we had only to look as far as Dr. Wright to find the person to carry on the great work of the Breast Center,” said Dr. Zenilman.  “Dr. Wright is an established and respected surgeon; and she is a deeply involved with the work of the Breast Center.”  Dr. Wright has co-authored articles for peer-review journals, including the recent commentary, “Less May Be Better: Axillary Dissection is Unnecessary in Some Patients with a Positive Sentinel Lymph Node,” that appeared in the August 2011 edition of Archives in Surgery - 2011: 146(8):980-982.   Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Wright received her medical degree from the University of Maryland School

of Medicine, where she is a member of AOA, the medical honor society.
