Bethesda, Md., (July 19, 2011) – For the 21st year in a row, The Johns Hopkins Hospital has taken the top spot in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of American hospitals, placing first in five medical specialties and in the top five in ten others.
Suburban Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), was ranked in the top 10 in the regional listings for the Washington, D.C. metro area. It performed nearly at the level of nationally ranked hospitals in six adult specialties including Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology. Other members of JHM - Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, and Sibley Memorial Hospital – also received regional rankings, and Johns Hopkins Children’s Center was ranked tenth among the nation’s top children’s hospitals.
To be included in the metro area rankings, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one medical specialty. In most specialties, data such as death rates, patient safety, and procedure volume were factored into the ratings. Suburban Hospital received high scores in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents, and medical mistakes.
“Suburban Hospital is a place where physicians want to bring their patients and where those patients know they will have the best possible outcomes and an exceptional patient care experience,” said Brian Gragnolati, Senior Vice President, Johns Hopkins Health Care System and President and CEO, Suburban Hospital. “We are so pleased to be part of Johns Hopkins Medicine and we congratulate them on the extraordinary accomplishment of being number one since 1990.”
