(Bethesda, MD, April 18th, 2007) - More than 300 Montgomery County residents and several County leaders joined Suburban Hospital, Macy’s, and the OASIS Institute for the grand opening of OASIS Montgomery at the Macy’s Home Store in the Westfield Montgomery Mall on April 12. OASIS Montgomery is the local arm of a national educational program for adults age 50 and over who are looking for opportunities to learn and grow. The newly built, 4,000 sq. ft., educational center includes two classrooms, a tutoring library with more than 500 children’s books, and a computer lab with 10 workstations.
Many distinguished corporate and community leaders congratulated the partnership among Suburban Hospital, Macy’s, and OASIS Institute. Special guests included Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner (District 1), Montgomery County Department of Economic Development’s Business Development Specialist Raul Medrano, U.S Rep. Chris Van Hollen’s Outreach Director Karen McManus, and Greater Bethesda Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce Chair Anne Martin. Macy’s representatives included Ed Goldberg, Senior Vice President of Government and Consumer Affairs (Macy’s East), Federated Department Stores’ Sharon Bateman, Operations Vice President for Corporate Communications and Corporate Giving, and Macy’s Store Manager Richard LeCours. Suburban Hospital President and CEO Brian Gragnolati attended as well as OASIS Institute President Marcia Kerz and OASIS Montgomery Directors Jane Silberman and Marcy Drozdowicz.
An OASIS membership, which is free, allows members to register for a wide array of affordable classes, opportunities for travel, volunteer service, and health promotion. The new OASIS Montgomery office is a consolidation of two Suburban Hospital/OASIS Institute-sponsored programs that previously operated in Chevy Chase and Lakeforest Mall. OASIS Montgomery membership totals more than 12,000.
“Suburban Hospital is committed to improving the quality of life for those living in the communities we serve,” said Gragnolati. “We are indebted to the OASIS Institute and Macy’s for generously providing this outstanding setting where mature adults can meet new people, develop new interests, and keep their minds and bodies healthy through participation in a wide range of classes and discussions groups.”
“We are extremely pleased to host this terrific new center in our Macy’s Home store,” said Thomas G. Cody, vice chair of Federated Department Stores, Inc., which is the parent company to Macy’s. “OASIS programs are helping redefine what life after age 50 can be and it is very exciting for us to be the national sponsor of this unique, innovative organization.”
“By merging the resources of two strong OASIS programs, we are able to serve a broader audience of mature adults by expanding our hours to include both weekends and evenings and offering programs in new community locations to reach people in their neighborhoods,” said Kerz. “This is a tremendous opportunity to inspire mature adults throughout the metro area to pursue vibrant, healthy, productive, and meaningful lives.”
OASIS Montgomery is supported by the OASIS Institute, Macy’s, and Suburban Hospital. Federated Department Stores, Macy’s parent company, is the national sponsor of the OASIS program. For more information on the program or to obtain a course catalog, call 301.896.3939.
