In the April 2009 Washingtonian, Suburban Hospital’s Emergency Department earned top marks for treating stroke, heart attack, and other emergencies by The

Washingtonian’s Top Doctors. The magazine surveyed nearly 500 physicians recognized in the April 2008 Top Doctors list, asking for their advice on area emergency rooms and where they would go for medical emergencies.  

 

In their list of choices, Suburban Hospital received the highest percentage for a Maryland hospital in the following categories:

  • What ER would you go to if you were suffering a heart attack? Suburban – 61%

  • Which ERs have the most effective triage systems? Suburban – 58%

  • What ER would you go to if you were suffering a stroke? Suburban – 63%

  • Which have the strongest medical and support staffs? Suburban – 51% (Johns Hopkins 22%)

  • What ER would you go to if you had an undiagnosed life-threatening illness? Suburban – 47% (Johns Hopkins 34%)

  • Which have the best technology such as CT scans and MRIs? Suburban – 56% (Johns Hopkins 22%; Holy Cross 10%)

  • What ER would you go to if you had a non- life-threatening emergency? Suburban – 58% (Shady Grove 21%)

  • What do you think is the best overall ER in the Washington area? Inova Fairfax 28% (VA), Washington Hospital Center 20% (DC), Suburban Hospital 17% (MD), and GW 13% (DC).
